Her name was Noyer.
She threw the cigarette to the pavement and extinguished it, bare foot. She walked on into the day, observing nothing, observing everything. Where she'd come from and why was a mystery even to her. Daughter to no mother, no father—she was an orphan of the mother earth.
In the deep pocket of her coal black wool coat, she had a cashier's check written out to Noyer Reynolds for the sum of $20,000 from the account of David Reed, Jr.
Her memories were an anthology of lives she'd never lived. She was a writer, a singer, a painter, a pianist, an architect, a doctor, a teacher, an engineer. She had seen everythi

Second PlaceOdd One OutI sat in the diner booth, sipping a root beer float. This was all too usual for me. I was constantly in this same diner in a booth similar to this one, drinking root beer floats. No one but me really understood why I did this so much.
The act of sitting alone in such a diner was comforting to me. The family that owned it, the Carlo family, payed attention to me, unlike my own family.
My family was to busy with their lives to pay attention to me. They all had jobs; they had better things to do than worry about me. I guess you could call me the black sheep of the family. I was different than my siblings, and it was evident.
My brother, Joel, was going to college to become a college professor in English. My sister, Kathy, owned her own real estate company and was making lots of money. My other brother, Alex, was a successful architect. He was building homes built for celebrities and he, too, was bringing in the money.
